How does net metering work?
Photovoltaic systems installed under net metering are connected to the public grid. The electricity they produce is used to meet the needs of the property, and in the case of surplus energy, it is fed into the energy provider’s grid and later offset.
The offset is based on energy (kWh). At the end of each billing period, the amount owed to the utility is equal to the value of the kilowatt-hours resulting from the difference between the energy produced and the energy consumed.
If the difference is zero, then there is no charge for the electricity consumed.
